On January 14 a new 6-track EP has been released by Chord Plaza Records.
The opening track M87 takes you to a dark dub techno journey towards the M87 galaxy. The dub chord theme is absolutely fits to an imaginary space travel. 4 Bars is based on a 4-bar minimalistic loop with modulated and delayed dub chord progression (make sure you check its versions too, e.g. No Drums Version). Slo is a slow dubby bass music track without a kick drum with analog chord themes. Pre-sales on Bandcamp: 14/01/2023. Release date: 20/01/2023.
Soma proudly presents Functional Designs, the latest collection of nocturnal environments from Deepchord, marking his first full length album release on Soma in 5 years. The enigmatic Detroit based producer once again transports us into his sonic realm via night-walks through numerous cities before being transmuted into aural excellence through field recordings, holographic synth tones, cosmic sounds and the hiss of electric wires. All swimming around in filtered 4/4 beats and subterranean basslines. The album is a perfect example of electroacoustic techno transmitted from undisclosed locations, the amalgamation of swirling tapestries of sound, deeper than night and lifeforms moving around underneath the grid.
The album glistens into existence with the beatless Amber breathing life into the project before the eventide of Darkness Falls offers a beautifully subtle and contemplative atmosphere. The guiding light of Transit Systems continues to offer up melancholy with echoing percussion and drifting soundscapes. The highly processed acoustics of Strangers brings a sense of intrigue to the album’s journey as Modell works in the most percussive track so far. Panacast is exotic dub techno at it’s finest, with warping and perfectly crafted synth work building gently over the top of sub heavy beats, glued perfectly together by the hiss of the collected found-sounds. In a slight rise in tempo, Cloudsat, makes a journey skyward, collecting mood and feelings from high altitude with its emotive synth work. The reverberating halls of Pressure again work as a testament to Modell’s sonic crafting – honing in on specific artefacts from his field recordings, imbuing them with deeper purpose. The perfectly titled Ebb and Flow drifts effortlessly on a tide of evolving, blissful sound waves crashing to shore as each one overlaps the other. Beginning the descent into the final part of the album, you begin your ride across a cosmic plain, lit by the glistening and ethereal Sun. The meditative Memories opens a conduit to other realms as the album closes out with the elysian melodies of Drassanes.
Deepchord once again proves he is a producer like no other. A true sonic sculptor who uses his real world experience to create vast, unparalleled soundscapes that captivate and enthral the listener.
Detroit’s deep techno master, Deepchord, makes a more than welcome return to Soma after 5 years. With a brand new album dropping, Rod Modell delves deep into his ethereal sonic world to bring you ‘Functional Extraits 1’. The first single to be taken from the forthcoming album. Built in a way that only Deepchord can, he transports you to different realms with lush soundscapes and perfectly processed electro-acoustics giving you an insight to the mind of the unique artist.
Shale glides across a field of electo-static noise, guided gently by cisps, fleeting percussion and gently warping synths. Lateral begins awash with waves of sound and glistening dub stabs while rolling beats acts as the heart beat of the track with a building intensity adding a sense of urgency. The uplifting yet dystopian sounds of Mapping spiral into existence urging you down the rabbit hole as more classic techno percussion manoeuvres this track on it’s journey. Modell seeking out his roots as yet more traditional dub techno prevails via the final track, Ricochet. Pumping kicks and sub set to a perfect pace and ambience is a perfect, contemporary nod to the time honoured Deepchord sound.
The long-awaited vinyl has arrived! 4 of Aura Fresh tracks has been selected by Odrex Music’s mastermind Patrick Peetz for a vinyl (lathe cut edition) release. 6 other tracks are included on the cd album (10 in total.)
Tracklist of the vinyl:
Karibi (classic four on the floor house groove with boomy bassline and positive chord atmosphere)
System (a clever techno tune with a lot of feather-like background chord layers)
Ionosphere (darker techno but still staying on the positive mood side with neverending, industrial chord-themes fading in-out, deep bass guaranteed)
Aurora (soft dubtechno tune with chill-out like atmosphere and a top high-pass-filtered chord theme repeating in every 16 beat)
After 5 years Aura Fresh warmed up the voltage controlled oscillators again and recorded his new chord impressions via an LM4250 chip based analog multi-mode filter module. Kicking techno grooves and analog chords guaranteed on the 3rd volume too. (In 2013 Aura Fresh released his first Modular Chord Impressions volume, then in 2014 the second volume was published of this series.)
Deepchord co-founder Mike Schommer is back from a 15-year hiatus with an entrancing 12″ on Steve O Sullivan’s Mosaic Records. After withdrawing from production for an extended period, the enigmatic producer revives his legacy with an unrestrained session using analog synths, drum machines and cavernous sound manipulations.
Interestigly the same sharp, edgy kickdrum was used in all 3 tracks on the release.
Invitation to Love uses minimalist 4/4 percussion and unfurling delays whilst Remember When explores echoed synth stabs in a broken beat framework. Lastly, tranquil stepper Into The Night carries floating chords and cyclical melodies through airy acoustics. Anamnesis presents three quintessential dub techno methods – offering a masterfully engineered package by one of the genres most revered figures.
New year, new EP on Chord Plaza Records. Aura Fresh is back with a 6-track dub techno release. Beside the original dubby, techy house-trip WintAir, the EP contains nice dub tunes like Elavult N Porlepte’s remix and Aura Fresh Re-Dub version. The release ends with the slower dubtech tune Hofodte and with emotional dubby vibes of Flakes Of Snow. Chords in the tracks were carefully led through analog filters and delays to add some magical spice to the sound. The dub techno label delivered a deep and diversified release again.
Our pick: WintAir (Original) and WintAir (Elavult N Porlepte Remix).
Collapsing, weird basslines, dirty tech-grooves, synth arpeggios as you like it…. Solar Phenomena are keeping up a busy and high quality release rate in 2018 with a fifth offering already. This one is a three tracker from STL, who already released his “If Time Would Move Backwards” EP on the label earlier in the year. The title track opens the account with blown out drums trudging along in ever changing patterns. Swirling, lo-fi ambience adds scale to the track and encourages you to get lost in the middle of it all. “Weed Detective” is ten minutes of psyched-out and stripped back drum work at an inviting mid tempo. Keys dance and heavily treated vocal sounds trip you out in slow motion. Last of all, “Scubbu Babe” has finger clicks, bright and mild crazed keys and ad libbed vocal sounds all doing gymnastics round more of those trademark drums. Once again, STL proves he operates in a world of his own.
